We're now at the end
of Des Voeux Road West, where it intersects with two more major roads
and forms a natural habitat for the Wild Man of Sheung Wan. This is a
tricky one to handle sensitively without sounding as if I'm sneering.
Of course I know this guy probably didn't have the option to live in a
house. What I'm amazed at, is that given he has to live on the street,
why would he choose to live on a traffic island?
We're talking about a five by fifteen foot lozenge
of concrete, with cars, lorries and buses whizzing past both sides of
your head 24 hours a day, and spraying you with choking black smoke. The
alternative is finding a nice tree somewhere, and living under that. Yes
there are trees in Hong Kong.
This photograph shows the wildman retrieving a
stored broom, and preparing to sweep his home clean. This is a full time
job as you can imagine, and when he isn't sleeping in to the deafening
he seems to occupy most of his time cleaning up the evil black dust which
spews out of the buses and trucks. I don't like to think what's in the
plastic containers, but I can only hope its cleaning fluid.
